This piece explores the instinct to love openly, generously and without reserve - to give with the quiet assumption that love is inherently reciprocal - while the heart-shaped space between the hands reveals that someone can accept everything you offer without ever intending to give back, leaving an absence where reciprocity was expected.

The heart formed between the hands is therefore both present and absent. It is created through the gesture of giving, but there is no indication that it is being held by anyone.

The piece considers the particular hurt of realising that someone did not simply leave with your heart, but that you gave it willingly — believing that in loving them fully, they would meet you there.

Not every act of giving is answered with another.

The title plays on the dual meaning of wholeheartedly — the act of loving with your whole heart — while whole becomes hole: the space left behind when what was offered is not returned.
